Odds and Ends about this blog and portfolio: Updated 11/4/16
Why am I doing this?
I am the proud father of three boys and wanted to find a way to teach them what I know, should they desire to learn how to trade stocks. If something unexpected should ever happen to me and their education not complete, this real-time account of my personal trading may be helpful in their pursuit.
What’s the strategy?
This portfolio will primarily be 100% technical trend trading. I will follow the pattern recognition system I lay out in Trade the Trader and at the time of this writing (November 4th, 2016) will follow a 50bp risk per trade rule ($500) and take half off at 1x, raising stop to break even. If you want to know more about my system, please feel free to pick up a copy of the book as I believe it does a good job in explaining exactly how I trade. Following the blog posts and asking questions should also bring you up to speed.
Will I short or hedge?
At this point my desire is to be long only as I have not had good luck trading sustained downtrends. My belief is that as long opportunities dry up, I will be forced to go to cash and therefore have a natural hedge in place. With that said, my goal is not to hold cash but to be redeploying capital into new opportunities as I find them. In theory when something is stopped out or hits a profit target, I should be redeploying that capital into a new name or several.
More on the Portfolio.
This is my capital held in a Joint account at my primary custodian Charles Schwab. I carved out approximately $100k for this experiment and at the end of October 2016, moved these positions, in-kind, into a new account so that I can track the performance of this account. I will update the performance on a periodic basis and should interest level grow in this, I would like to implement some way to track this on the blog in real time. As a general introduction to positions, you should start reading HERE.
More about me.
I am a professional money manager and founder of Tatro Capital. We are a fee-only RIA with approximately $85MM in discretionary assets under management. We have a very strong emphasis on financial, retirement and Estate planning and believe that it is not productive to invest money for someone without first understanding what the long-term objective for these funds are. When we invest on behalf of our clients we follow a fundamental, technical and behavioral economic philosophy. You can learn more about our services HERE.
I am an adjunct professor of finance at the University of Kentucky teaching an intrinsic value class and overseeing the students who manage a part of the University endowment.
Finally, but by far the most important, I am a family man with a lovely wife and three wonderful boys. We are a mission minded family working on sustainable economic business projects in Haiti and supporting many local efforts to work with inner-city youth.
Disclaimer: This blog and all of its contents are for educational and informational purposes only. I am trading a real-time, real-money portfolio and will post all information regarding my trades on this blog. Investors should always seek the council of a professional adviser before making any investments on their own behalf. My goal is to educate you and hold myself accountable for my own trading. These are personal trades and most are not trades that are taken within our separate managed accounts. I will always mention if a trade is held for clients as well.
